Around 40,000 Twitter users reported issues with the social media site between 12.48am and 2.03am UK time, according to the outage monitoring website Downdetector.

The website had also published a ‘Twitter outage map’ which shows issues have been reported by people across Europe and in the US.

Users in Mexico, South America, South Africa and the Philippines are also having problems with the site, according to the map.

One user wrote: “If I may, I will add to the list of current issues: not being able to tweet, retrieve, load tweets, bookmarks, or even log in now. It was working perfectly earlier today.”

Another wrote: “Some people can’t log back onto the twitter app either, it keeps saying error.”

Millions were unable to send tweets for over two hours when the website crashed in October 2020.

The company said it was caused by an “inadvertent change” to Twitter’s internal systems and the website was not hacked.
